Before even sitting down to write your speech I recommend that you do some preliminary research. This is very important as it will ensure that your speech ticks all the right boxes in terms of expectations from the bride, the bride the groom and the guests. You need to understand what is expected of you and why you have been asked to speak? Is it because you are known to be funny, or is it because you are wiser than most? You also need to understand a little about the guests to ensure that you do not cause offence, especially to a senior member of the family. Speak to the bride and groom and perhaps their parents and ask what they are expecting, which topics are taboo.

Once you have completed the initial research it is time to plan your speech. Write down the topics that you would like to cover. Further research is also useful so, again speaking to friends and family of the bride and groom can be a great source of material. Suggestions of topics to research are:

Marriage: Anything interesting happen at the parents wedding? Enquire about the cake, photographer etc

The bride and groom's past: How did they meet, How long have they known each other, where they were born, there school life etc

Family history: Where were the parents born, family name meaning etc

Once you have researched the topics it is time to define the structure and work on the style. All speeches have a start, middle and end. Do not get hung up on trying to start at the start!! Once you have completed your speech then read it aloud to yourself. This is invaluable it ensuring your speech flows nicely. If sentences are too long then break them down. A key tip is to remember that you are writing to speak, you are not writing a report.
